Jun 26, 2008

 airport news
(Infocom) — The National Concessions Council has published an international public bid, No. 01-2007, which establishes the concession terms for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the new passenger terminals at Liberia’s Daniel Oduber International Airport.
In this manner, the National Concessions Council officially communicated all firms interested in bidding for the public works concession about the airport project, as the government, according to article 25 of Law No. 7762, has decided to extend the deadline for presentation of bids by 30 working days, beginning June 26, 2008. Bids now must be received by 2 p.m. on Aug. 8 of this year a the National Concessions Council’s building in San Pedro de Montes de Oca, east of San Jose.
The decision, which was published in the official government paper, La Gaceta, on June 18, informs all interested parties that they can now obtain an official copy of the bid’s specification with the latest changes made at the Council’s headquarters. The document is free to all those firms that had obtained a copy before the latest round of changes was conducted.
In other news pertaining the Liberia airport, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) has informed that tourists arriving through this terminal will now have more shopping options there, as the administration will open next July a duty-free store and kiosk.
These new establishments will increase the range of products available to visitors, including spirits, watches, cameras, fine perfumes, tobacco products, and chocolates.
The new duty-free shops were established in response to the increasing passenger traffic experienced at Daniel Oduber. It is estimated that this year more than 500,000 visitors will arrive in Guanacaste. Only during the first quarter of 2008, passenger influx in Liberia has soared to 156,028 people, according to data provided by the Civil Aviation General Office. This represents an increase of 13 percent compared to the same January-March period last year, according to the Guanacaste Chamber of Tourism (CATURGUA).
The shop and kiosk will both be managed by the Social Welfare Mixed Institute (IMAS), with proceeds going toward financing for low-income families. Even though the establishment of these stores will be conducted separately from the terminal expansion, the space for the shops has already been set aside, and it consists of 127 square meters for a total investment of $275,000.
According to renditions provided by IMAS, the store will feature ecological motifs characteristic of the Guanacaste region, such as volcanoes, forests and reptiles.
