Costa Rica named best Latin American destinationNov 30, 2007 Source "The Guanacaste Journal" http://www.journalcr.com/news_article.php?edition=67&article=1353 Costa Rica named best Latin American destination (Infocom) — Costa Rica has ratified its quality as a top tourist destination once again, this time being named best destination in Central and South America by the Travel Weekly Awards, presented every year by Travel Weekly magazine.
Last year, Costa Rica also won this prestigious award, defeating countries such as Panama, Chile, Peru, Argentina and Brazil.
The award is the result of votes cast by more than 120,000 magazine readers, all members of the U.S. tourism industry, who considered that Costa Rica has a quality tourism product, good services and countless attractions.
Within the Best Central and South American Destination category, Costa Rica was nominated alongside nations such as Peru, Belize, Brazil and Argentina. The latter two countries were also nominated last year.
The awards ceremony will take place in December in the United States.
Tourism Minister Carlos Ricardo Benavides said this distinction reaffirms Costa Rica’s positioning as a top tourist destination within the U.S. travel industry.
Travel Weekly is an important and prestigious tourism and travel magazine that has been publishing in the United States for the past 37 years. It is considered one of the most influential media outlets among that industry, with a monthly run of 49,000 copies.
Costa Rica has also been presented with an honorable mention as Best Responsible Destination from European tourism wholesaler Virgin Holidays.
Among other factors, Virgin Holidays highlighted the country’s sustainability policies, specifically the Tourism Sustainability Certificates program and the “Peace with Nature” initiative promoted by the central government, which seeks to take concrete measures to compensate for Costa Rica’s carbon emissions.
